Machine that gives out dog food to strays for plastic bottles

Yesterday, I was browsing the net as you do and I came across this rather amazing invention which is both helping the environment and feeding the stray cats and dogs of Istanbul at the same time!

It’s a machine from the Turkish company Pugedon, and it's been invented by dog owner and animal lover Engin Girgin.  He wanted to show people that they can do good things with items they would normally throw away and also that Turkey needs to do more to recycle goods.  He thought about it, put his ideas down on paper, and took it to his company. They are into social projects, and they are well known in Turkey.

The machine is solar powered, so it costs nothing to run.  The cost of the cat and dog food is met by the income acquired from recycling the bottles.

The machine has 3 holes.

One at the front is at eye level.  It's for depositing plastic bottles or cans.  A sensor can tell if these are recyclable or not.  And if they are, the dog food falls into the bowl in the third hole near to the ground.

The second hole is for liquid.  If you've left some water in your bottle, you can tip it into the second hole and it will go straight down to a bowl next to the food, so the animals can have a drink.

The third hole is the one with the bowls for food and water so the cats and dogs can enjoy a drink.  But you have to feed the machine with your recyclable bottles and cans before the food and water appear.

Istanbul alone has about 150,000 stray dogs.  Many of them go days without eating anything at all, so this invention is a great way to help them - without food and drink, they wouldn't survive.

The machine was first put in north west Turkey in the city of Eskiehir.  Pugedon have now had enquiries from over 60 countries about the machine so the word is spreading about its capability to both feed strays AND recycle unwanted goods at the same time.

Watch the video - the machine really is a clever idea.  One of the heart-warming things about it is the way the children can be seen entering into the recycling with great enthusiasm. It helps them care for the animals in their neighbourhood without any cost - apart from buying their drinks to begin with!

It's great to see a creative idea turn into a reality which helps both the environment and feeds animals at the same time.
