If you're thinking of planning a celebratory party, if you're thinking of using Sky (Chinese) lanterns, please can I ask you to read this first?
Sky/Chinese lanterns can harm wildlife, livestock and pets by causing injury. These injuries can cause suffering and worse, a slow painful death.
The RSPCA says that many people don't realise how dangerous sky lanterns can be to animals. It says that their sale has already been banned in countries such as Austria, Germany and Malta. It would like to see local authorities up and down the country ban their use so this needless suffering can end.
Sky lanterns, fireworks and balloons can terrify, injure and kill animals. Examples of injury include:
· Cattle have died after bits of sky lanterns have fallen into their feed
· Baby birds have been abandoned after their parents have been spooked by fireworks
· Balloon scraps landing in a field can be eaten by animals with fatal results
· Holly, a nine-month-old goat died after the frame of a lantern punctured her throat
· Animals can accidentally eat parts of sky lanterns which have fallen to earth, or balloons - with terrible consequences.
So if you are willing to take action and urge your authority to join the increasing list of councils which have banned their release, click here.
Please find another way to celebrate rather than releasing sky lanterns or balloons
