National Nest Box Week - 14-21 February 2015
National Next Box Week 2015 starts on 14th February and runs through to the 21st February.
The idea behind the week is to encourage people to help increase the number of nesting places for birds. The event is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology and all you have to do is to put up a nest box to help our feathered friends during National Nest Box Week.
Mind you, as the BTO's website points out, you don't have to wait until the week, and if you've missed it, you can still put up a box.
The problem birds have is that their natural nest sites - holes in trees or old buildings - are vanishing as we try to "tidy" up the natural world and repair old houses.
This is a great chance to make a difference to bird conservation - you can also enjoy watching the breeding birds coming to your box.
You can register for free for the week here and there's a great guide to which boxes suit which birds here. There's help on how to make a nest box here. Plus great tips on putting up a nest box - there's more to it than meets the eye.
The British Trust for Ornithology are hoping people will monitor their bird boxes and tell them what they see. And they have volunteer surveys you can take part in.
You can join the BTO or give a gift membership to it for a bird lover here.
