The Marine Conservation Society is having its annual Big Beach Clean Up which takes place from 7th to 13th May 2015.
This is a great chance to make a difference and play a part in clearing marine litter from our beaches before the summer really arrives.
The Marine Conservation Society has teamed up with M&S for this clean-up - M&S are involved in a number of conservation efforts, including the recycling of Christmas cards with the Woodland Trust and the Big Butterfly Count with Butterfly Conservation. And it works with the WWF on environmental projects in its supply chain, as it works to increase its sourcing of sustainable raw materials. They have a Plan A scheme which gives them a way forward to do their bit to be the UK's most sustainable retailer, with over 100 commitments to help them achieve just that.
Since the clean up started, over 20,000 people have taken part - and 62.5 tonnes of litter have been cleared from our beaches and canals. Last year for instance, the Clean Up cleared nearly 11,000 cotton buds, 21,900 wrappers and a staggering 55,600 plastic pieces. The more we can all do to eliminate these things and stop using them, the better.
The MCS's website has all the info you need to register and sign up. Too many of our beaches are littered with litter which can be very damaging and dangerous not only to our wildlife but to people as it's hardly hygienic. We can all play our part and join in. And if you don't live near to the sea, please spread the word anyway!
